attn. FoxTrot-Search group members:

Greetings from the sweltering Swiss summer.

We are pleased to make a preview of FoxTrot version 5 products available to you today for testing, in the hope that you will put these versions to work and report feedback to this group or to us directly.

Please see below for download links and all five products.

Three main area of emphasis for testing are:

- the new mechanisms for more automated transfer of indexes from Mac to iOS via an http upload/download
- Mavericks support, for those of you who have access to it.
- performance optimizations on existing installations and OS versions

For the FoxTrot Search team:

Release notes:

Version 5.0b1 features:
Enhanced IOS Support
◦ FoxTrot indices can now be synced from FoxTrot Professional or FoxTrot Server, to FoxTrot Attaché on iOS, using web sharing. This is a very significant addition that enables seamless periodic uploads of indexes, either clear or encrypted, either containing just text or complete document sets, to be downloadable at any time from iOS. This mechanism supplements the ability to drag index files using iTunes, and introduces an optimized format for read-only index archives.

Preliminary OS X 10.9 Mavericks support
◦ Finder tags are indexed and categorized in addition to OpenMeta tags.
◦ Known issue: the FoxTrot system menu is not working correctly on Mavericks.

Miscellaneous improvements
◦ Google Earth .kml files are now indexed.
◦ A hidden preference has been added to allow indexing a given file type using the metadata importer of another file type.

Bug fixes
◦ Some text documents containing very long lines with no space character could fail to display in the preview pane.
◦ Some document types were not indexed when no specific metadata importer is found, althought they are a variant of another document type for which a compatible importer exists.

System requirements
◦ FoxTrot 5.0 requires an Intel Mac running Mac OS X 10.6 or later.
◦ Present builds work either as a 30 day demo or are enable using a FoxTrot version 4 license key

-----------------------------
>> FoxTrot Attaché Search iOS
-----------------------------

Software:

Release notes essentials:
◦ Support for downloading indices produced by FoxTrot Pro or FoxTrot Server from http servers
◦ Note: only download and install the contents of that archive if you are currently a tester on the same

>> FoxTrot Search Server & admin

Hi Jean-Michel

Thanks for this notice.

My immediate response to the feature set for this release is that it
does not deserve to be an integer release. Unless I am misreading the
feature set it seems to me that there are two main improvements: iOS
syncing (which seems to be a clone process to an available directory)
and 10.9 support.

Maybe the 10.9 support took a lot of work. I don't know. If it did,
fair enough. It is welcome.

I don't like saying things that are critical, because I just love
FoxTrot. It is the best at what it does by far. And I don't mind
spending for an upgrade every couple of years, but I like it to have
some more new stuff, even a UI overhaul or some more UI polish. Or a
native indexer/parser for .eml and .emlx files. I haven't thought a lot
about it, but probably there are some other new features/improvements
you could make.

Maybe 4.5 was too big a release and you feel that 5.0 is the only
natural progression.

Anyway, I'm just giving you a first response. It is not a big deal, but
I thought you might like to know.

cheers
David.

Hello,

I find it unfortunate that the files .eml are not indexed.
