1. 2. No, the left sidebar cannot be hidden or collapsed: automatic categorization is a key feature of FoxTrot, and we do not want users to overlook it.
However, you can choose the "Tall Screen Layout" from the toolbar. This gives more width to the other panes, but they then share the window height.
3. there is no menubar menu for this, but you can assign this action ("open in default application") to certain keyboard, mouse or trackpad actions, from the "viewing" preference pane.
