Fox Trot Losing Indexing [message #461] Fri, 20 January 2017 22:23 Go to next message

I gave the trial version a try and it worked fine. Now that I've bought
the personal addition, it keeps losing it's indexing.

I'm using Foxtrot on one iMac to search the contents of a folder on another
iMac. The file is shared through wifi with Apple File Sharing.

Anyway, Foxtrot will index the file, and work. However, when the computer
is shut down and restarted, Foxtrot loses the information and will not
work. At which point, the file needs to be indexed again. As it takes
quite a while to create the index, the current situation is unworkable.

Any thoughts or suggestions appreciated.

Thanks,
Benjamin

Sir,

Typically for searching volumes which are mounted remotely, folks tend to use FoxTrot Professional since it gives more flexibility for this type of usage scenario,

Nevertheless there is no reason for which this should not work in Personal if the obvious is done - making sure that the remote volume is indeed mounted when searching. (In FoxTrot Pro you can add a separate index for such volumes for instance, and decide whether you are searching online content or not.)

What exactly do you mean by "loses the information" ? The index ? The access to the indexed data ?

When you look at your preferences then, are the folders from your remote volume grayed, as in off-line, or visible, or absent ?

Suggest you follow up to this message in a private support case please (Help menu) so as not to burden list members with an individual case. Thanks,

Where in the help menu can I start a private support case? Sorry, I don't
see anything. I went to your website and its email form there, but haven't
heard anything back. Thanks!

And, yes, the volume is grayed out, however the remote volume is indeed
mounted.

A tooltip should appear to show the full path of the volume when moving the mouse over the grayed out volume name. Then you can compare to the actual path of the volume in the Finder, by dragging the volume icon to a plain text TextEdit window, or to a Terminal window. For some reason, the volume gets probably mounted to a different path. Making sure to carefully eject mounted volumes before disconnecting the network, or putting your machine in sleep mode, would probably help avoiding this.
