A tooltip should appear to show the full path of the volume when moving the mouse over the grayed out volume name. Then you can compare to the actual path of the volume in the Finder, by dragging the volume icon to a plain text TextEdit window, or to a Terminal window. For some reason, the volume gets probably mounted to a different path. Making sure to carefully eject mounted volumes before disconnecting the network, or putting your machine in sleep mode, would probably help avoiding this.
