Are you using FoxTrot Personal, or Professional?
It seems that "search as you type" is enabled in the preferences, and your index (or the currently selected index, in case of FT Professional) no longer contains any data; make sure that some folders are indexed, in the "Files" preference pane (FT Personal), or in the "indexed data" pane of the "manage indices" window (FT Professional).

"I used to spend hours and hours looking for a file that I swear that
I had on one of my drives, but just could not locate. FoxTrot Personal
Search has saved me countless hours of frustration. I strongly recommend
this to anyone who is tired of misplacing files and then having that bad
feeling when you can't find it."
