Hello,
No, there is no predefined or arbitrary limit on the amount of files.
When files are found on the client, but only preview as plain text, and can't be opened or revealed in the Finder, this means there is a configuration problem on the server.
In the "sharing" pane of the index, "shared folder" and "volume name" should correctly defined so the client FoxTrot can "translate" the server path to a client path.

Can you describe more precisely the problem? Here are things to check:
- make sure that the criterion popups are correct (search in "contents, any metadata or filename", "includes all of the words" etc)
- make sure that you have not restricted the search to a specific subfolder ("In: All Indexed Locations")
- make sure that the "xxx most relevant items" is adequate
- make sure that no unwanted filtering categories are selected in the left pane
If you can identify a document that FoxTrot does not find, please send us a copy of it, and include the search string so we can check if there is a problem.
Kind regards
