The author of MailMate has explicitly stated that neither POP nor local storage as we know it will be implemented.

Power users have gotten around this by setting up a local IMAP server (dovecot?) and then syncing stuff over to that instead. I’m going to investigate that option at some point since I’m really not entirely happy with the crummy UI of PostBox.
