I am new to foxtrot pro search. I am trying to set up FT so that it will
index and search a devonthink pro database. Here are the steps I am taking:
I go into Manage Indices, then to Indexed Data, I create a new index, then
a new predefined location using a devonthink database, I then select the
checkbox "Also index hidden files (and application packages contents)".
Although the index is created, it does not index the PDF documents etc in
the Devonthink package. What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for any help that you can provide.

DEVONThink Pro stores its files inside a folder named "Files.noindex", which is inside the dtBase2 package (which in turn is in {home}/Library/Application Support/DEVONThink Pro 2).
The .noindex extension is to prevent Spotlight to index the contents of this folder, and FoxTrot honors this as well. To force indexing the contents of this folder, you need to add this folder directly (instead or in addition to a parent folder) to the indexed locations.
Navigating to this folder in the standard file select dialog (when clicking the "+" button) is not easy as it is hidden; You can open it in the Finder by pressing the shift key in the "Go" menu to menu to go to the {home}/Library folder, then right-click the .dtBase2 file and choose "Show package contents". Then drag and drop the Files.noindex folder to the list of locations, in FoxTrot Pro's Manage Indices window.
For DEVONThink (non-PRO), the Files.noindex folder is directly in the folder "{home}/Library/Application Support/DEVONThink 2"

In fact, this is true, but this is probably not what you should index with FoxTrot.
Instead, you should make sure that your DEVONthink database has a Spotlight index, then add to your indexed locations in FoxTrot the folder {home folder}/Library/Caches/Metadata/DEVONthink 2 (or DEVONthink Pro 2).

I have to say as a long time DevonThiink user i disagree with this as I personally don't find the DT metadata very helpful as it is indexed in Foxtrot. I want to quickly to the full original document . I follow the method outlined here and I'm very happy with it so far

We will try to include a predefined location for indexing DEVONthink / DEVONthink Pro database in the next minor release.
Do you suggest this predefined location to index the files in the Files.noindex folder, instead of the metadata cache? If so, can you tell what are the problems for you with the metadata cache?

As I remember, I tried the metadata approach but each record was a mass of unformatted text….if it would be helpful to you I would be glad to index the metadata folder and then send along a screenshot of the results. For now, all I can say is that I have added the noindex folder to the index and it works great.
