Good evening,
I wonder if there is any continuing development going on with PowerMail.
Specifically, there are a number of areas that likely need help in the near
future for the program to remain relevant.
1) Future Mac OS' beyond Mojave will no longer allow 32-bit applications.
2) Transport Layer Security (TLS) in PowerMail is stuck at 1.0 whereas the
world has moved on. Even Sierra uses 1.2. Many ISPs are turning off TLS 1.0
support now (pair networks, for example) Long Term, POP downloads will no
longer be possible for many users if TLS stays at 1.0. That in turn means
that the lovely sorting we have gotten used to will no longer function
also.
3) The IMAP implementation of PowerMail is quite simply weak. I hope that
can be overhauled and made as robust as the POP3 functions that preceded it.

Hello,
As mentioned previously, PowerMail is 32-bit only, and its IMAP implementation was lightweight by design.
Our own ISP has moved on to cancel TLS 1.0 support, so in order to continue using PowerMail we have moved on ISPs.
And when Apple drops support for 32-bit applications, we will continue to run PowerMail on 32-bit capable versions of macOS.
PowerMail is not on the cutting edge, but it does what it has always done in its uniquely efficient way… we are not representing suitability for any intent or purpose.

Thank you Jean Michel,
It's too bad that Powermail is no longer getting updated. I am
transitioning to PostBox as we type, a process that is both tedious as well
as frustrating. The good news is that the number of emails getting mangled
in the conversion process is less than 0.0005% but so much time will be
lost re-writing the many rules for sorting, etc. Postbox doesn't have the
ability to use a honeypot to train SpamSieve. The UI is also not as
intuitive. Oh well!
As for IMAP, "lightweight" is an interesting way to describe the weakest
part of the program. The good news is that deleting the contents of the
IMAP cache fixes IMAP issues consistently. The resultant rebuild times
taught me the benefit of having small IMAP accounts.
The many years with PowerMail have been fabulous, it's speed, flexibility,
and excellent integration with SpamSieve is without peers. It interesting
how FoxTrot search grew out of PowerMail. I may yet buy that product for my
desktop.
Anyhow, if you or your team ever decides to update PowerMail, please
contact me so I can come back.
Cheers, Constantin

Constantin, how did this go for you, the transition to PostBox? I'm trying
to figure out what I'm gonna be having to switch to. I love my PowerMail
and I don't want to give it up, but the time is definitely coming!

If you are looking for other options, I'd also recommend MailMate. It is
extremely highly configurable, and works with SpamSieve flawlessly.

Thank you - how did it work for importing all your old mail? It seems like maybe I'd have to first export everything to apple's mail and then somehow convert to IMAP? I've been continuing with POP all this time. I don't want to lose everything.

If you are into POP operation, then I'd be wary of going to IMAP. Many
providers prefer IMAP, for a myriad of reasons, though the most likely
reason is that it makes your account "stickier".
The good news is that it's easy enough to export Powermail into a wide
variety of mailbox formats (thank you, CTM DEV!).
I find PostBox a inferior substitute for PowerMail for a number of reasons,
though it is one I have to use due to my ISP (and the rest of the world)
moving on and CTMDEV abandoning this product. For example,
- the UI in PostBox appears to have originated on the PC and wandered
over to the Mac. The quick and easy way of dragging and dropping stuff for
archival storage is neither quick, nor easy. Filing things now takes much
longer.
- Similarly, the rulesets available for sorting gear are powerful yet
also needlessly complicated. Yes, you can accomplish a lot more than with
the PowerMail filters / rules / etc. but it's also a lot like a Rube
Goldberg machine, where all sorts of things can go wrong.
- Searching for stuff is needlessly difficult. By default, the program
will only search in one folder, even if you selected "search all folders"
to start with. Ugh. Finding things takes longer not because of the search
but because of the UI.
I did figure out a way to honeypot stuff for Spam training after all.
However, PostBox doesn't integrate presently with SpamSieve.
Unfortunately, this is likely the best POP-capable program out there for
the time being. I want to try out GyazMail when the author is done
re-writing it for 64-bit and TLS 1.1+.

Hi Jo,
This is from MailMate manual:
If you are migrating from a POP3 only email client then you can try the
“File ▸ Import Messages…” menu item in MailMate. You are then
asked to chooses files or folders to import, and you also need to
specify an IMAP mailbox to be used as the root for the imported
messages. MailMate imports the following:
single messages in standard RFC822 format (.eml, .msgd)
single messages in Apples extended standard RFC822 format (.emlx)
messages within mbox files (.mbox)
MailMate uses names of mbox files and names of folders in the hierarchy
scanned to create a hierarchy of IMAP mailboxes.
Note that the file extensions noted above are currently hardcoded, i.e.,
MailMate ignores all other files.
MailMate is insanely configurable and the developer is extremely
responsive. I can't rave enough about it.

Hi Zvi,
Thank you for this. Not that I quite GET it, but I think I just have to try it and see. I did love what I read about the capabilities of MailMate - seems right up my alley, if only I can get my existing old mail into it. (probably should take this opportunity to purge a lot!)

I also migrated to Mailmate, which is an excellent product. It is the
spiritual successor to PowerMail the way PowerMail was, for me, the
spiritual successor to Claris Emailer.
It has its own excellent search, but you can also configure FoxTrot to
index Mailmate's mail.
I've imported many email archives into MailMate with no difficulty.

It was some time ago, but the process was rather simple as I recall.
Export your email to mbox files, then import them into Mailmate. I
recommend you aim to be fine-grained, don't export all your email in one
mbox file. One per folder is sensible because then you can import them
to specific folders.

Another note on this: Before you import into MateMate, you should first
create an IMAP account. Then, MailMate will upload your email to you new
mail server.
There *may* be an option to keep the copies as local only. I'd look
through the MailMate manual (online) and the discussion group. There's
lots of useful information in the group.

The author of MailMate has explicitly stated that neither POP nor local storage as we know it will be implemented.
Power users have gotten around this by setting up a local IMAP server (dovecot?) and then syncing stuff over to that instead. I’m going to investigate that option at some point since I’m really not entirely happy with the crummy UI of PostBox.
Cheers, Constantin.

create an imap account from within MailMate? Or a new account, period? I have several email accounts, some gmail, some personalized, some comcast.net. (I just seem to collect them...) but I have virtually all set up as POP. I could change that for most, I think. Would that be what you mean?

I've just attempted this and I can't find where they went. I chose the 'export to Mac OSX Mail' option. It opens (Apple) Mail. There seems to be no physical .mbox file anywhere on my hard drive - I don't see an option specifically called '.mbox' to export to. See screenshot:

Hello-
I went to open PM 6.21 today like I do every day or every time I restart my Mac and today for some reason I got database out of date messages and now I can go no further. I backed up the Powermail Files folder to a separate drive. I also notice PM is no longer on the CTMDev site- are you no longer supporting it? How can I migrate my PM email to a different program?
