I have a normal mac with all my files, most of them in dropbox, and a small
macbook air where I use dropbox smartsync to keep most files accessible but
off the hard drive. Indexing requires downloading, so it would be a lot of
work to make and update many partial indices. Can I share and use the main
index from the larger mac on the macbook?

That is not recommended; As far as I know, Dropbox would sync your index both ways as soon as it has been modified. Although your index file should normally not be modified on your MacBook Air if you only use search, we can't guaranty that, and this could easily corrupt your index.
However if there is a Dropbox setting to allow sync your index file one way only to your MacBook Air, then you can try that. I am not familiar with Dropbox Smart Sync, I don't know if it would automatically download a found document when you click on it in FoxTrot to preview it; in the other case, FoxTrot will display a plain text version of the file, stored in the index file.

ok thank you Jérôme. This requires some testing. I don't know either
whether Dropbox can sync one way. It may be less work to make partial
indices.
