What is the difference between 'rebuilt...' and 'update' for managing indices? [message #247]

I added a file in the folder I have as a main index and then I updated the
index. After I searched specifically for the content of that file it did
not appear in my results. Do I need to rebuilt the index every time I add a
new file?
